Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Acclimatization Hikes Near Lone Pine

I'm permitted to day hike the main trail on June 6th. I'm planning on getting into Lone Pine on the 3rd, and wanted do some a couple of hikes to get used to the altitude and break in some new gear. Any suggestions for moderate hikes in the area that people enjoy? Thanks!

Anything out of Horseshoe Meadow. Most impiortant, however is where you camp, and that;s a good place too.

Horseshoe Meadows is 10,000 elevation. Onion valley out of Independence is 9,000. It's easier to camp at Horseshoe.

Kearsarge Pass did the trick for me. Scenery alone was well worth it. Work in Matlock Lake on the way up if you are able.

We lodged in Lone Pine; the drive to the trail head in Onion Valley was around 45 minutes.
