Hi guys,

I've stayed in the backpacker campgrounds at the Portal for my last 3 October attempts at Whitney. I am planning to make a trip to the portal in the Winter (probably won't go any further) and would like to stay there again. I understand that a road walk may be required to do this.

Is camping at the portal allowed in the winter? Are the backpacker campsites open in winter? I believe the fee was $15 or so. Are there any INYO permits required for camping there?

Thanks,

Hi TrekkingPole, see the Road Closed thread, and this post.

The road is closed, so if you drive around the sign, you go at your own risk. There will be no official regulations in effect other than the "road closed" situation. You could camp on the pavement for that matter. Just don't get yourself into something where you need help, because it will be hard to get any.
