Now that I have started talking longer schleps, I noticed that the angry, round, 1/2" ulcers have re-appeared on my legs where (apparently) my pants must rub against. Mostly, the little round ulcers appear mid-calf to lower calf. If left alone, they become deeper (almost like a tiny bedsore)bleed, and eventually can become infected. If I remember to place Vaseline on the spots RELIGIOUSLY, eventually the spots fade.

I was wondering if anyone else suffered this malady?

Could it also be that the sole of the boot on the other foot grazes this spot once in a while? Unless you're wearing stiff denim, I can't understand how the pants could do that.

A couple of fixes come to mind. Find some tall socks to wear, either hiking socks, or a thin liner sock that goes calf-high. Or before the hike, wrap one or two rounds of tape around the leg where the sore appears.

You also could try applying something to minimize the irritation like Body Glide.

You might try wearing a kilt - I'm not kidding. I bought mine last summer from sportkilts.com, and it is terrific. No chafing and plenty of freedom of motion; better than shorts. You can go naked under the kilt (traditional) or wear light weight underwear. There are several companies that make them for hikers. However, it does get a wee bit chilly sometimes; definitely not the best winter wear...unless you wear long woolen socks.

Here's a couple of PCT hikers, with kilt and skirt.

The woman must have been having the same chafing issue as you, Bee, since she's wearing some sort of anti-chafing protection on her calf. wink

I met several men hiking the PCT in kilts on that trip.

I bought some Body Glide and I am giving it a test in a few minutes (chasing the sun!)

Actually, the skirt err kilt (Utilikilt is great) is an excellent idea, and when I am with others, I wear a skirt or shorts and have no problem whatsoever. The sticky wicket is that when I hike alone, I do not allow myself to "expose" any skin (see gun thread on WPSMB for explanation smile so as to not bring attention to myself (I try for the androgenous look as much as possible when alone)so I am stuck with full coverage until the world becomes a whole lot nicer place...B

Bee, this is somewhat perplexing. I've never heard of this, in this location. There is generally no rubbing in this area, so I wonder if there is some sort of seam or something. confused

For chafing areas, I'm a Vaseline kinda guy, I've found body glide inferior. Bag Balm also good.

Another maneuver might be to take a 2 in wide X 4 in long piece of tape over the area in question.

Ken! I just checked the fleece pants that I run in (yeah, I was thinking how could fleece chafe???) and there IS a nasty, scratchy seam that would pass over the areas mentioned when I walk fast or run (one in in the same!). It is the side seam, so my hiking pants have the same seam, also. It is really pathetic that I have this princess physiology (frostbite, chafing, heart condition) that I am tying to get to adapt to beeing ruggedly outdoorsy. I will continue to use the Body Glide an Vaseline (the Vaseline stopped the progress towards bleeding, last year) and I will see if I can find some seamless hiking pants (also, I noticed that when I wore thermals, I had no problems, either)

The dude has got some very hairy legs! Wait, them thar are gaiters!

I remember seeing a post on the WPSMB and I went online to convince my wife for us to get a pair. I believer they are very versatile and cost around $70.00. What was the name of the company?

Dang. Help?

A Scotsman was a dinner party seated next to an attractive young lady that queried as to what he wore under the kilt. He invited her to check and on doing so she said "Oh! that gruesome!" To which he replied "Check again and it'll gru some more."

Caught it 'Tude. She could find gainful employment there. He could too - as a cook or dishwasher . . .

Thanks, Mike; I hadn't heard that one. Here are a couple more kilt jokes:

On being accused of wearing a skirt say, "If it was a skirt, I'd be wearing underwear."

"Sir, is there anything worn under your kilt?" Respond: "Aye, extremely..."

When someone asks to look under your kilt say, "Go ahead, as long as you promise to kiss whatever you see there..."

This brings to mind, I don't know why, when John Wayne was getting a Hasty Pudding award he was asked if he had any problems with his sex life. "Calluses", was the reply.

Bee... a tad lighterweight then thermals or fleece... try pantyhose (even if they're just knee highs).. you can cut the feet out so that they're kind of like leg warmers.. and they'll protect your legs from chaffing. I know alot of horseback riders who wear pantyhose under their johpers to keep their thighs from chaffing...

Silk pant thingies would do the trick too.
