Thinking of doing Langley as a warm up for Whitney. Concerned about snow coverage, though, as I am not yet able to rely on ice ax/crampon skills.

Given the snowpack this year, do folks have predictions regarding when the two major routes up Langley (i.e., New Army Pass, and Old Army Pass) respectively would be sufficiently clear of snow/ice to permit a axe-and-crampon-free hike up the mountain?

Thanks!

There are a few ways to approach this...

1. Forget about it in July -- there will be too much snow for both passes.

Army will without a doubt be loaded with snow until very late, and depending on the heat New Army will at the very least have a big cornice at its top. The earliest I've been over New Army is 4th of July after a very mild winter.

or...

2. Consider using Cottonwood Pass, which will be open.

You can climb Cirque Peak, then go around the cirque and head to Langley.

You should monitor trip reports when the season begins because it's always hard to tell exactly how things will go. I agree to say forget Army Pass but New Army is a gamble. I went up it once on June 7th 2008 which was a lower snow year if I recall right and the snow was not that heavy but did have a small cornice near the top but there were several locations that you could bypass the snow if you don't mind lower class 3 scramble to the top.

June 7th 2008

May 23th 2009

Both those images show a common theme of a large patch of snow right in the middle of the route and it being mostly clear to the left of it. That area is an easy scramble.
