Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion Um, WTF just happened?

So I retired from the Navy in early May. Had the bucket list of hikes all ready, maps, gear, everything. 2011 was gonna be a banner F ing year for sure. Planned on knocking out the JMT and going in to the Gambler's Special with my son and tons more. Got nothing but time, right?

We bought another house. At first we were going to use it as a rental, but the thought of just moving into it and never having a house payment was to appealing. Of course it was a dump. I've been working on it 15 straight, long, hard days and it needs a lot more. I have to take a week off for Scout summer camp because the troop paid my way, but the point of my tale is - I haven't hiked chit. Nothing, nada. I don't know when I will put my boots on. At this rate I'll be lucky to get up Whitney. The way my back has been lately, maybe I'm done. Depressing, really.

Then again, my new place is starting to look decent. Maybe by August I can haul my fat, out of shape butt up some trail. It ain't as easy as it used to be. I used to be in shape and have no time. Now I'm retired and not in shape. It ain''t fair............................DUG

Nothing like a fixer-upper to suck up all your time. And you thought you'd have LOTS of free time! Sounds like you found your next job.

I've got a building project going on at my house, and have a pipe-moving project in the back yard. My back yard looks like a giant mole (me) has been having great fun.

Just remember, any progress on the trail at any speed is good. There is no alternative. Just do it.

I feel your pain, literally. My house recently became a fixer up...anyone who has a California built in the late 80s with bad ABS drain pipes know what I'm talking about.

I went for the first time in 8 weeks yesterday. My legs are just a tad sore...a good feeling.

You're retired and gettin a pension, gotta a fixer-upper. Hey, some people live in apartments and have nuttin to call their own. Got some scouts that look up to you!

So you're outta shape, so what? That's an easy fixer-upper.

Take a road trip, secure a walk-in permit, take a hike, take it all in, go as far as Trailside Meadow. Ah heck, let it go and go!

You got family all round you, you got friends here, you got your wits and health...

It don't get any better than that, Navy.
