I'm planning a two nighter this summer and was considering several trails just sw of Post Peak. There is a "formal" Post Peak loop trail but I was more interested in the dozens of small lakes south of Post Peak (Lady Lake, Chittenden, Lillian, Fernandez, Rainbow....). According to maps and guide books there are dozens of different options and small side trips.

Any advice on the best locations to visit? best camp spots?
thanks

I have only been to Rutherford Lake around there and it's just another nice little lake. Nothing super great about it. Post Peak Pass though still stands as one of the nicest passes I have ever crossed. If I ever go back over there I will climb Post Peak itself for sure to get an even better view so i'd say it's worth a day hike up there.

I've done some Wilderness Ranger work in that area. Personally, I think the whole area is a unrecognized gem. Every trip I've done has seen very few people, and most of the area is pristene. I think all those lakes are nice (been to them all), and are filled with trout.

I believe I was able to see the back of Half-Dome from Post Peak.

I don't think you can choose wrong in this area. The trails directly out of Clover Meadow are definitely used more.

If you see a thin older vigorous man in a FS uniform on the trail, that is John Glenn. He is a volunteer of extraordinary skills. A couple of years back, he won the FS Directors Award for primitive skills. This means that as a volunteer, he was recognized ahead of all employees of the FS nationwide, which is remarkable. He is a great, but humble guy, and a retired Veterinary Professor from UC Davis.

I didn't know John Glen patrols that area. He was a good teacher at Crosscut school.

Yep, that is John's home base. He spends each summer based out of Clover.

by the way, I was certified as a "C" certifier with crosscut last weekend. Now I've no excuse not to cut. smile

Thank you for the information. I found it in my guide book, but it looked like one of the less visited areas. I think the National Park shadows that area. I need to check on permit status for that trail.
