Hi everyone, yesterday i confirmed a Whitney permit at recreation.gov, and the status of the permit did not change. It still says: Reserved - Payment Confirmed. Is this normal? Thanks!

All you have is reservation. You have to show up at the Eastern Sierra InterAgency Visitors Center to get your permit.

I have no outstanding permit reservations, so can't answer this. Maybe someone with a reservation can try it, and let us know.

I am not sure what "confirming" a reservation does. You still need to go to the Visitor Center to pick up the actual permit.

In years past, you needed to show up by noon the day before for day hikes, and by 10 AM on the date of entry for overnights, to get your permit. After that, they were given away as walk-in permits.

If confirming does anything, it might delay the pickup deadline. But I doubt that is the case. I do know that if you will be late, you can call the Inyo N.F. Wilderness Permit number and let them know, and your permits can be held for later pickup.

This is a little off topic but pertains to permits. I have 6 (the max) permits to hike Half Dome. I printed our permits from a website. If I print more than the allowed 6 permits (I can, I tried)what's to stop us from bringing more than 6 in our group? I know we will be spread out on the trail not all reaching the sub dome together. Will there be a Ranger there checking permits and will he notice if there more than 6 with the same group leader?

You need to confirm if you are not able to pick up your permit by 11:00 AM (I think that is the deadline). if you do not confirm, and arrive after the deadline your permit may have been given away. I should add, this is the procedure for day hikes.

Ok I understand now. However, on our (day hike) reservation, it says confirm and pick up permit by 1:00 P.M. Is this the time you meant instead of 11:00 A.M.?

I guess that is correct. I've forgotten what the cutoff time was, and in my case I was not going to get there until 4:00 PM, so I needed to confirm in any case. There is really no reason to "not confirm". You can do it on line, or via phone call. Then if you are delayed un-expectantly you are safe.

According to Permit Pickup Instructions, "You must pick up or confirm your reservation before the deadline or the reservation will be canceled. Deadline for overnight permits is 10 am on the entry date. Deadline for day use permits is noon one day before the entry date."

To confirm your group size, log onto your account at Recreation.gov and go to your reservation.
If your group size will be smaller than you reserved, correct the group size.
Click the confirm reservation button to ensure your reservation will be held until the close of business on your entry date.
