Mt Whitney Zone Forums General Discussion anyone have extra spot available on their day hike permit?

I missed out on the lottery and no permits are available until October. I'd really like to hike Mt. Whitney in a single day sometime in the next few weeks and am hoping someone out there had someone in their group cancel and is open to having me join them!

I am an in shape 29 year old and open to doing this trip with anyone else who is fit enough to complete it in a day. I haven't done a 14k peak yet, but I recently tested myself on San Gorgonio (9.8 miles, 6,900 to 11,500) and reached the summit in 3 hours 25 minutes. I'm certainly willing to chip in for costs and more, and if you are in the Los Angeles area, I would be willing to drive you up.

If you check online, there are currently 12 day use permits available in the next two weeks.

Particularly during the two-week period before a hike, people will log in and release some or all of their reservations. So if you keep checking that link, you are likely to find exactly the day you want.

Also, there are always walk-in permits available (free) if you go to the Visitor Center in Lone Pine the day before you want to hike.  Check the links in this post:  Unused Whitney Permits for 2014
