If anyone has a single extra permit for overnight summit May 20 please let me know :-) I have one permit secured for that date but I will be hiking with 9 other strangers unless I can get one more permit...

or...

If anyone has TWO extra permits for any weekend in May/June/July let me know and I will make new plans

I got to the cables in October last year during a snow storm that covered the trail so I had to stop there. :-( looking forward to summiting this year.

Thanks :-)

Jean, welcome.

I don't understand the "I will be hiking with 9 other strangers unless I can get one more permit" part.

You can count on getting a permit when you walk-in. Based on the unused permits numbers, dates in May for overnight permits have NEVER filled up, except Memorial Day weekend.

You will likely be able to get one on May 1 when people who won lottery permits who haven't paid for them will lose them. Check online throughout the day on May 1. But even then, go on the trip, walk into the Visitor Center and ask.

By the way, in May, there may not be a store, but there will definitely be snow. I doubt people will be using the trail past the cables at that date. Instead, they use crampons and climb the snow slope west of the switchbacks.

EXCELLENT info you are posting for me and others. Thanks for your links to the historic data of unused permits. At this point I am considering driving up on a Sunday (from San Diego) to try for a Monday overnight permit in June for 2-4 people. if I can put this plan together I will give up my May 20th permit.

I answered an ad for a permit from a group who has 10 permits. They committed me for one permit May 20 but I have never met the other 9 people so they would all be strangers to me. I would rather hike this on a Monday with my brother and we are already talking about this again!

Jean McC -- one failed Whitney attempt for me last October due to snow covering the trail above the cables.

lamamesui: Keep checking online, but especially throughout the day on May 1. A number of permits will show up that day at random times.
