Hi all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. My partner and I are heading out from Colorado to (hopefully) score a walk-up permit on Sunday the 23rd with the intent of climbing the MR on Monday the 24th. I've heard that chances of getting a single-day walk-up permit for a weekday are much better than a weekend one, but I'm open to any and all suggestions there. We also have Tuesday free too, so if we don't get a permit for Monday we'll try again for Tuesday I guess.

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye out for trip reports for the next two weekends to get a better idea of what it's looking like up there. Sounds like we'll be bringing our 'pons and axes regardless, and we sure do enjoy a nice and steep snow climb FWIW.

Oh, and if anyone has any suggestions on a similar class 3/4 route on a different peak as a Plan B I'm all ears!

Cheers and thanks!

You won't need plan B. You will get those permits!

I assume you have found the unused permits pages.

Unused permits page you say!? I'm going to go look for that now.

Thanks!

Edited to add: is this an official unused permits page you're referring to or something? I'm coming up blank.

Google: Unused Whitney Permits

Inyo National Forest staff has forwarded the numbers to me at the end of every year. I've been posting them, so you can get a feel for your chances.

I'll make it easy for you: Unused Whitney Permits 2016

Yeah, I Googled it after your first reply, but the explanation wasn't really jumping out at me.

Thanks for the details! Looks like we shouldn't have a problem (hopefully).
