Likely conditions June 2-3?

I know this year did not have a ton of snow, but some did come late, so just wondering about trail condition predictions for the first weekend in June. In years past with similar total snowpack, it seems the switchbacks were opened right around that time. The reason I ask is that I've never been up Whitney that early and I'm taking someone this time around who is not too familiar with ice axes, crampons, etc. Hoping we might be able to get away with microspikes and poles.

Naturally, I'll be monitoring trail conditions throughout May, but any insight now is appreciated.

If the switchbacks aren't being used, microspikes are not a good idea. If you are going overnight, you could set up camp at Trail Camp and practice and get more familiar with crampons. Crampon and ice axe use links are here: Important Whitney links
