I've done Whitney many times in late summer but never this early in the year. Do I need an ice axe and crampons with this drought?

Keep checking the "Current Conditions" thread, including the most recent posts there now. For May 11, based on current discussions, I would assume that the switchers will be snowed under and the direct route up the "Chute" (its not really: its just a steep snowfield) will be the preferred route, and as posted, it is not advised without crampons, axe and the skills to use them.

Wherever you go, there you are.

Randie, I also think it is safer to bring and crampons and an axe. Read this post and view photos from May 3rd, on this forum.
