Mark, Thanks for sharing your great photos! You capture expressions and action well. People in almost every shot. Fun igloo and sledding shots too. Great to hike with you, Shin and Cheryl again. Can't wait for next time.

Love this comment "wasn't comfortable doing the final 400"
That is what keeps me from planning a MR trip.I'll have to be roped just because of the exposure.

Yep, I read Mike's TR and saw it was Corina, see my change a few posts above. Thanks for info about Cherida as I remember meeting her at the hostel in 08. Guess I have to get up earlier to slip one by your sharp eyes Laura.

Steve, thanks! Who knows the next one might be bullet points and one liners. Hopefully those one liners would make Groucho proud. grin

great photos, looks like a blast. we are headed up end of the month. Snow is looking thin, anyone on snow shoes or is it over kill? Couple questions on the notch if you don't mind: i noticed you went up the rocks instead of going in the snow between the rocks, any Reason? Did you rap back down the notch, if so what did you anchor to?

-Thanks

Lzpup: good luck with your trip. I've posted some photos from last week. See the topic "Whitney MR, March 1-4".

It's been a very dry winter so far, but conditions could change by the time you get there. There's a chance of snow every day from Monday through Saturday next week.

I've hiked from Whitney Portal to Lower Boy Scout Lake (LBSL) four times (March 2006, April 2006, March 2010, March 2012), and used snowshoes every time. Above LBSL, usually at some point you'll be switching from snowshoes to crampons.

A few days ago, it was pretty dry above the Notch. Our group kept our crampons on briefly to climb a sloping ledge covered with snow, but then took them off and scrambled over Class 3 terrain the rest of the way. Conditions will probably change next week, as the winter storms pass through.

You might consider bringing a 30-meter rope for the descent back to the Notch. We brought one, but didn't use it. About 25 or 30 vertical feet above the Notch, there's some webbing tied around a large sturdy boulder. Somebody left a rap ring around the webbing, which could be used if you decide to rappel down to the Notch.

WildTurkey: this topic was started by So.BayMark in April 2010. There's another topic, "Whitney MR, March 1-4" that contains photos from my group's trip in March 2012.
