Nice report, J. Congratulations making it in a day! It is definitely a tough hike, and the heat can really get to you.

I was glad to do it in May when days were longer and temps not quite as high. And I left at 4:45 AM to try to get through the worst heat before it peaked.

You carried a lot of weight. Was it supplies for the overnight?

Your pictures are spectacular! People can see the full size picture by clicking on the smaller one. Click again and it gives the larger-than-full-screen picture. What camera did you use?

I am also curious: what sort of conditioning did you and your dad do in the few weeks before the hike?

Thanks Steve!

I'm the biggest (6'6" 280#) with the most experience on-trail. I was carrying extra food, extra water, a first-aid kit, a water purifier and, gear for our night on the North Rim. I wanted to make sure I had all the emergency tools just in case my Dad was reacting poorly. (He showed us...)

I use a Canon T2i with a set of nice lenses.

My dad and I hiked in hot temps and I did gorge hiking (down first, up last) running and back, legs and shoulder weight training.

Yet another trip report/experience to document the fact that a rim to rim day hike of the Grand Canyon, is, in fact, a CLASSIC hike.

No bias here, huh? I, of course, had done my own rim to rim day hike just short of a year ago.

What I found particularly interesting in THIS trip report was that your sense of fatigue, hardship, and questioning of if things would work out or not . . . sort of matched EXACTLY how I had felt and what I went through.

A singular experience, for sure, and one that all who endure it can be well proud of.
