Monday, Dec 20, 2010: The precipitation just continues to roll in!
Checking the snow depth stations at CA DWR, Cottonwood Lakes has gone from one foot to six feet in the last three days.
Crabtree Meadows on the west side of Mt. Whitney doesn't have a snow depth reading, but the snow water content between Cottonwood Lakes (CWD) and Crabtree Meadows (CBT) is almost the same. Water content for both has gone from 3" to 12" in the past three days.

Have seen references to "might be the snowiest December since 1969" or similiar, in multiple places. What happened in 1969? Weren't records kept prior to 1969? I skied Mammoth in the early 70's, and it was a going concern then, although nothing like it is now.

Kevin, the one thing I recall of '69 is a huge flood in the early spring. Apparently one of those warm rains came and caused a huge amount of snow to melt. The reason I remember is because I took advantage of the flood and took a 2-man Folbot kayak down the Tuolumne river from La Grange to Waterford during full flood stage. Awesome ride -- 18 miles took an hour or so. It normally took 5.

1969 is when Mammoth first began recording snow levels (officially at least).

Almost worth the enforced ad, etc. Watch the pedestrians & especially the large diesel pickup truck in the last few seconds. If anybody knows how to extract the action without the ads, speak up.

It looks like half the cars that hit something could have avoided it if they had stopped breaking!
