This is not the year to snowshoe in Yosemite. Even their ski area, Badger Pass, is "only 1 good storm away from opening".

I was skiing today at China Peak (elev 7000+), on man-made snow. I have never seen such sorry dry conditions like they have this year.

You might as well take your hiking boots to Yosemite.

Edit... Just checked Yosemite road conditions (209/372-0200 (press 1 then 1)): All roads in Yosemite, including Glacier Point and Tioga Pass are currently OPEN! This year is really breaking records. frown

You are better off heading up Baldy, Jacinto, or Gorgonio if you want to snowshoe.

From where I live, NO SNOW on the local peaks from my kitchen window. This time last year was a different scenario.

The weather forecast up here is....DRY.

Tioga Pass is open....rare for this in December!

If you plan to come up, bring a fishing pole cuz there ain't much else to do but HIKE!

When we do finally get some snow, a good destination for your snow camp trip is the south rim with spectacular views across the valley and up valley. Leave from Badger Pass where they stop plowing the road. Dewey Point is about 3.5 miles from Badger Pass. If you go the 10.5 miles to Glacier Pt along the road, then skis might be a better option. They convert the GP visitor center to a lodge in the off season so you can make reservations to stay there, but it books up.

We've done easy family snowshoe hikes with the kids around Badge Pass and it was really special. This overnight trip to the rim has been on my bucket list for years. Hope you can make it, if so, post some photos.

snowshow where?

Here's the view from Dewey Point when we do get some snow
. We've oscillated into a La Nina year so the Pacific moisture typically goes to the northwest. Still nothing on the 2-week forecast horizon for the Sierras, but sooner or later...
