My husband and I will be attempting Whitney for the first time in September. We hike quite a bit here in Arizona using both hiking boots and trail running shoes, depending on the trail. Since we have not experienced the Main Whitney trail, we are wondering which type of shoe might best fit the trail?

We are looking forward to meeting some of you this year!

Hi Trailgypsy,
This hike has been done in sandals, wingtips, "go-aheads"/thongs, etc... But I think you would be well advised to wear your hiking boots. The trail is 22 miles long, and you could even have snow in Sept.

...even barefoot! by Barefoot Ted.

And today, Dustin from Austin, TX, posted his trip report showing the trail runners he used -- with crampons!

Maybe they grow their toenails really long in advance?

In the locals here in SoCal, I have worn mountaineering & hiking boots, trailrunners and low cut hiking shoes. My position for the MMWT is put something on your feet in which you have confidence. For me, that is a pair mid-weight backpacking boots.

Everytime I descend the trail my feet are killing me at the bottom but this type of footwear seems to work best FOR ME on this type of trip.

One thing I always to on the way down is to stop at Trailside Meadow, take off my boots and put my feet in the frigid creek for about 10 minutes. It makes a big difference. Dunking your head is also advised. It is the pause that refreshes.

Thanks for all the information. I think we will stick with hiking boots!
