North Maroon Rescue

Wow, Steve. Up close and personal! Notice how close the main rotors blades come to the rocks. Brave helo crew and SAR climbers.

For those of you who aren't on a SAR team, just think of the adventure you're missing, besides helping save lives.
Check it out: http://www.mra.org/ There's probably an MRA team near you. Volunteer!

Jeez, monumentally scary!! Folks: as cool and manly as this looks let me strongly suggest that, should you find yourself in the situation of watching a helicopter do a medivac, that you find the biggest most solid looking tree or boulder and get behind it. That helicopter was operating at the absolute edge of its abilities. The military, especially, does that and is comfortable with it. That doesn't mean that you should be. A slight downdraft or power loss and all that torque would have been smashing against the rocks and there'd be shrapnel everywhere.

George, there is no text to go along with that video. That is the 2002 Mt Hood helicopter crash, I believe.
Google search

Amazingly, everyone survived that crash. Three climbers who fell in the original accident weren't so lucky.

Getting further off topic....

This Incident Report is excellent reading about the climbing accident. The analysis is a good reminder of what failure to follow the basics can lead up to.
Amazing video! I don't understand something, though, that perhaps those more experienced could explain: it appeared that all of the people picked up by the helicopter got into the craft on their own power. Who was the injured party?

The Colorado newspapers reported that he suffered a broken jaw and made no mention of any other injuries.
Get in da chopper!!!

That's one expensive ride.

Some skill for the pilot there.

North Maroon is a temperamental mountain and climbing it is like walking on a stack of broken dishes.

Was a bad couple of weeks in Colorado with several rescues, SAR missions and several fatalities including the terrible event near Mt Princeton in Buena Vista.
