I am interested in camping at Lone Pine Lake. Do i need a permit for that even if i don't plan to enter the Whitney Zone?

Yes. It is within the Wilderness, so you need an overnight wilderness permit. Call the Interagency Visitor Center in Lone Pine to find out if you can get a permit outside the Whitney Lottery.

I think since it starts on the Main Mt Whitney Trail, that the same permit as farther up the trail is required.

Yes, that makes sense: same trailhead, should be under the same quota.

The MMWT Permit is to enter the Whitney Zone. It is a different Wilderness Permit to camp at Lone Pine Lake.

Well, I contacted Inyo N.F. staff regarding this debate. Here is the reply:

This map shows where day hikers are required to have a wilderness permit (all the area in the RED boundary).

One qualification: despite the impression the map may give, no part of the John Muir Trail is in the Whitney Zone, and even Whitney summit is not in the Whitney Zone.
