Mt Whitney Zone
Hi – is there a good Android/Apple GPS map application that is good for the Whitney Trail? This should help me and my group stay on the trail.

I’m currently using Maverick, which is quite good, if a bit unpolished – but I’m wondering if you guys are aware of any other ones?
You shouldn't have a problem finding the trail; it will be well travelled by others. Take a map (like the Tom Harrison maps) that you can buy at the ranger station.

A caution: keep your group together. Have a strong hiker act as "sweeper" to make sure no one gets left behind. One of the frequent causes of people getting lost, and SAR has to be called, is when the group splits or one person lags way behind.
Marcus, Try the Gaia app. Did some research before going for the $9.99/year option. Used on several hikes since. Confirm your phone gps works on airplane mode. Battery usage in this mode is not bad. test it b4 u go.

Planning 2 use it as backup to map/compass starting 080817.
Drop the electronic gadgets and apps. Use only for emergencies and photo ops. Be careful of selfies. grin

If you don't know where you are going, maybe you shouldn't be on the trail.

Enjoy the scenery and the sounds. You don't need an app for that. like!
Thanks Bob, we'll have a map and compass in the squad - but I'm a weekend hiker, so GPS will be my primary method of navigation! Plus, this is a Class A trail - and probably about as busy as Time Square at rush hour, so I doubt we'll need any navigation?

GPS was there more for peace of mind smile
Hey Mark - I gave Gaia a try - you should check out Maverick Pro - it's much cheaper (one off payment), and I think you get the same, if not more maps.
After hike conclusion:

I used AllTrails - worked like a charm all the way.

Anytime we had any doubt about the trail, I got out my phone, and there it was - our position, and the trail.

Helped us a couple of times when the trail seemed to fork slightly for no reason.
Did you leave your phone turned on all the time? How well did the battery charge last?
Yes, the phone was one - I just had it on flight mode most of the time. I was also using it to take pictures all the way up.

The battery lasted all the way up and down.

The main drain on any phone is the cellular radio - so as long as you put it in flight mode, you're golden.

Most navigation aps only need GPS, which will still work in flight mode. Just make sure your wifi is also off.

And don't forget to download the relevant map at home before you leave!
