I'm a fairly regular Whitney climber, and my 8-yo daughter is stoked to join me for a hike up Whitney before she heads back to school next week. We had permits for early July but we gave those up because she broke her wrist and was still recovering. Now she's ready to go. We've done plenty of training hikes, she runs 6-10 miles at a time with me regularly, she does triathlons, and she has plenty of mountain experience. We have plans to walk-in for permits* but if anyone has a group going that day with space for us, we'd love to join you. Otherwise, fingers crossed that we get permits, and we'll see you on the trail!
*Yes, I check the reservation site constantly...
You can probably pick up no-show walk-in permits on Saturday at 2 PM for Sunday. The unused permits page shows there are often one or two left at the end of the day.
You didn't say: Day hike or overnight? Whitney in one day would be a monumental feat for an 8 y-o!!

Day Hike and we just got two permits off the reservation system! The power of persistence! I think Whitney will be a challenge for her but she has a wonderful attitude (after all, she's coming because she wants to after seeing me go so often). If you see her out there, give her a hi-five!
