I’m planning a trip over Armstrong Col to climb Colosseum Mountain and Mt. Perkins this summer. I want to know how far I can expect to drive my stock F250 4x4 before I start hiking.

A maintained dirt road goes past the Sawmill Pass TH and becomes an unmaintained 4WD road near Scotty Spring. The USGS map and Google satellite photos show the 4WD road ending in Armstrong Canyon above 8,500’. Andy Martin got his 2WD Honda to 8,000’ in 2008. Does anybody know whether erosion and rock fall (especially in spring 2017) have destroyed the road, or will it be easy in my truck? Thanks!

You might try calling Eastside Sports in Bishop (http://eastsidesports.com/eastside/) for information. They sometimes have more recent news than the USFS.

Eastern Sierra 4X4 club members might have been up there recently. http://easternsierra4wdclub.com/contactUs.php

Do you have a 4WD truck? A 2WD might not make it.

Thanks, Bob. Somebody I know on summitpost hiked it last May. It’s probably good to 8,070’ and maybe even 8,300’. I think I’ll contact the 4WD club a few weeks before I go. And, yes, I have a F250 4WD.
