What was your pack weight for the main trail, doing one night at Trail Camp? Would love to get below 40 next time. Thanks!

SteveC and I did a five-day trip last summer (not to Whitney). Mine weighed 32 pounds, including a tent, stove, filter, and 4 pounds of water. Steve started out with 22 pounds, including none of the items I just mentioned.

The first time I did Whitney I was carrying 47 pounds, but that was when I was a inexperienced backpacking noob (2015 ) and thought I had to start with 3 liters of water and had all kinds of extra stuff.

Last year when I did Onion Valley to Whitney, I manged to get it down to 44 pounds (but then that was a planned 6-7 day trip).

Shorter 2-3 day hikes I've been able to get under 40 pounds. I think I managed 37 for a planned 3 day hike last year.

The biggest problem is the biggest weight items (tent, pad, sleeping bag, bear can) really don't change weight unless you buy new lighter weight equipment.

Minimizing the water you start with is also a good idea. the Whitney trail has plenty of water sources up to Trail Camp, so 1 to 1.5 liters would probably be fine to start. A full 3 liters is 7 pounds... yes, I weighed the full camelbak to find out.

During my Whitney attempt, I packed for 3 days/ 2 nights. At the trailhead, I threw in a couple extra items that probably added 3-5lbs (extra jacket some food and a large paperback book). Pack weight was 38lbs.

I have light/ ultralight "Big 3" gear so my pack should not really be that heavy. Which means I've got some work to do to dial in my weight.

16 pounds including food but not water, overnight at Outpost Camp. Late August and good weather.

Well, I did have a stove: titanium wing stove burning esbit tablets. Stove plus fuel was under 8 ounces.

I didn't carry a tent, but took a good bivy (Titanium goat) that I never opened up -- the weather forecast was for clear and dry conditions.

My pack is a ZPacks Nero or something close, weighs 1 lb. I use a garbage bag cut down the sides for a ground cloth. My mattress is a NeoAir shorty, I add a very thin foam pad under it to protect it from pine cone thorns. My canister is from Ursack. My GoLite bag weighs 2 lbs. No filter, dip and drink using a 600ml Snow Peak cup that doubles as my dinner pot. I carry a 1-liter bottle for water, and a 20 oz gatorade (pee) bottle. 8-oz "garden shoes" (cheap crocs) work for camp shoes and water crossings.

I love my setup. Foul weather would require better rain equipment.

For this trip my pack weighed 17 lbs dry. With food and 2L of water I think my pack weighed around 25 lbs at Cottonwood Lakes TH.

At the other end of the spectrum, we carried some pretty heavy packs on Denali, and we pulled sleds full of gear when we were lower on the mountain. We usually did a “double carry” when we moved camp. When we moved camp from 14,700’ to 16,300’, three of the guys carried gear to 16,300’ and then descended to carry cached gear from 15,700’ to 16,300’. I stayed behind to help pull the fixed lines and then ended up carrying an extra 700’ of rope from 15,700’ to 16,300’. My pack probably weighed 85 pounds.
