Hi we are a party of two shooting to summit via the MWT. We are looking to link up with other hikers hoping to summit during that window. We will break the trip into either 2 or three days. PM me if you are heading up at that time and would like to collaborate.

Hi there -Am starting on 5/30 and hope to complete it in 2 days. I've never climbed on ice, used crampons or an ice axe so any tip would be appreciated!

Perhaps it would be wise to learn how to use an ice axe and crampons (along with other basics) in a safe environment before you attempt to climb Mt. Whitney in winter conditions, which make even the main trail quite hazardous ? The benefits of free rescue may become useless if you take a nasty fall.

Any one hiking on 5/20 my partner can no longer travel with me to California and I don’t want to miss this hike. I’m a solo hiker right now if any one out there doesnt mind me tagging along with them just for safety.. I’m doing the day hike

I’ve got extra permits for June 5th and will be visiting Tahoe on June 1st to practice the ice axe. There’s one more person coming, but I have 2 spare permits. If you’d like to join our group, we’ll be happy to have you.

My partner and I will be climbing up Friday May 31st and descending June 2nd. I have done Whitney both in dry and snow conditions. If this is your first time climbing in snow conditions without the experience of crampons, ice axe or snow alone, it may be unsafe but use your judgement and tenacity if you want to reach the summit.

Sierrahiker- I strongly recommend to look at youtube videos on using crampons, ice axe, and self arresting techniques. I will be taking the whitney chute above basecamp and it can be pretty intimidating. Last year a group of inexperienced climbers with all the necessary gear fell down the chute and I think one person had to get airlifted with serious injuries. There is a video somewhere on the forum where someone filmed one or two of them sliding down out of control.

There will also be other people on the trail so you are never alon. I will be fishing on the way up and way down so if you see me, say hello smile. Goodluck!

Thanks you and others for your responses. I don’t intend to take risks to go to the summit. I’ll only go as far as my skills reasonably allow.
