I have read several reports now about frozen filters and or bladders recently. Though I'm coming down on Monday October 7th (when it will be warmer than it was during those posts) I'm wondering if I need to change out my bladder plan for insulated bottles?

for the filter, i am planning on just keeping it in an inside pocket to help keep it warm (body heat).

You can insulate the bladder itself but usually the hose will still freeze even with the insulator shield on. You can wrap it inside your pack with a large hand warmer but the hose may still freeze. the Super Warmer is the biggest, warmest one.

After drinking, blow the water that's in the tube back into the bladder. If there's no water in the tube, it can't freeze. If you're carrying the bladder, it'd have to be REALLY cold for the bladder to freeze.

Doug at the Portal store gave my wife and I some really good advice on this issue. He said to carry the bladder under our jackets and other layers. This worked really well as the backpack belt holds the bladder in place. Plus just put the tube inside as well. When we went up the other day the low was around 20' and didn't have any freezing. Another bonus was also carrying less weight in the pack.
