Re: Cool Videos - 06/26/11 05:46 PM

Atari, as I've recently gotten into rock-climbing, I bet I've watched that video a dozen times. Of all the free-solo clips I've watched on YouTube, this one astounds me the most. Ueli trained specifically for this climb for an entire year before he attempted it. Seeing him scale the rocky face with just crampons and ice tools makes my palms sweat, and watching him running (running!) in crampons along the summit ridge, with a cornice clearly visible, just leaves me speechless.

Unfortunately, these free soloists don't often live to a ripe old age due to the risks they take. If you've seen the video of Dan Osman free-soloing Lover's Leap, you wonder how the hell he wound up finally killing himself in a situation when he was actually tied in to something. Free soloing is cool to watch, but the guys who do it are just a little bit nuts.
Posted by: CaT

Re: Cool Videos - 06/27/11 02:24 PM

Yeah, this one has even more of a pucker factor for me when watching it than the one of Dan Osman free soloing Lover's Leap in California, which is, in its own right, absolutely astounding, and which I've watched many times.

Re: Cool Videos - 06/27/11 03:18 PM

Bulldog, I liked it so much I downloaded. It really is an incredible feat. If I didn't watch it, I would not have thought it was humanly possible. The guy really is amazing. Beyond the climb up, as you said, I just can't believe he RAN with crampons on that narrow summit ridge. The other thing that impressed me is how incredibly fast he made it up that steep snow slope near the summit when he was on all fours. I remember how SLOOOOOOOW I was on the main chute at Whitney a few weeks ago, and laugh when I think Ueli would probably have taken five minutes to finish that thing! laugh

Not to take anything away from his strength and skill, but a question about the rules of the game. How is it a first ascent when you take a fall - or for that matter tension - on bolts you didn't place?
Posted by: Fishmonger

Re: Cool Videos - 06/30/11 03:29 AM

how? that's how most of Europe climbs. I spent years in climbing areas there where every bolt was put in by the "Alpenverein" - power drill and cement. You still have to climb it.

I didn't watch it that closely - cared more about the camera work than the dude climbing. Seems like they did two climbs and the second one showed him at first working out the route before actually climbing it.

Re: Cool Videos - 07/01/11 03:18 AM

Yeah, it was two climbs. The first was a repeat but the second was billed as a first ascent. Awesome skills displayed, maybe it looked a little cavalier because of that: it was harder than he made it look. And what looked like tension on the anchors could have been camera angles.

What did you think of the camera work?

Re: Cool Videos - 07/22/11 06:45 PM

A blast from the past this week. This pre-YouTube video is of Catherine Destivelle soloing in Mali. Filmed in 1987, High Magazine commented,

"the film Seo of her soloing on a sandstone cliff in the Mali desert is one that has been seen worldwide and the one clear image that has stuck in the minds of the general public in Britain".

This was undoubtedly true at the time, and most climbers of a certain generation will have seen this film before, however now that video is ubiquitous across the internet, it is easy to forget such classics as this.

The film examines the local people, the Dogons of Sanga, for whom climbing is part of their everyday life. Catherine is fascinated by these people, and they admire her daring solo climbs.

It entirely depends on how far south they come, which in itself, is due to a combination of the strength of the CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) that strikes the earth, the direction the earth's magnetic field is tilted at the time (south is favorable for northern lights, whereas north inhibits them), how far in that direction it is tilted, and whether the CME is directed squarely at earth.

Normally, in our part of the world, most displays of northern lights are visible only well up into Canada (with the top end of the swath beginning at about 20 degrees south of the north magnetic pole, which is currently somewhere on Ellesmere Island). However, sometimes they are visible into southern Canada and the northernmost U.S. states, and less frequently, as far south as the southern states, the Gulf, Florida, or even Southern California. On the rarest of occasions, they have even been seen in Mexico.

Created by science teacher James Drake, the time lapse video has become a YouTube hit, watched almost 2.5million times since it was uploaded last week.

The clip travels from the Pacific Ocean south over the Americas before reaching Antarctica and sunlight.

Lucky to be alive after being upper body slammed by a 400-pound antelope at full speed. It looked to me like both were on their own courses with "blinders" on and that the antelope saw the biker only at the last second, tried to leap over him, but couldn't clear him in time. Wow!!! What a blow!!

Anyway, Adam Ondra already has won just about everything there is to "win" in the sport, and he is still very young. The part that is interesting about him is that he's not stuck in one niche of the sport, but constantly looking for new challenges. What he'll do next is the most interesting part about him. There's a related video about the above movie outtake that sheds some light on how much insiders expect him to push the envelope in the coming years, in the words of Alexander Huber http://vimeo.com/33704646

Those Backcountry Access (BCA) packs run about $700, have replaceable cartridges once they've been deployed. The theory is that it increases your surface area, keeping you on top of the snow.

they work quite well in that respect. As far as statistics are available, they increase your chance not to get buried at least by a factor of 10.

http://www.wildsnow.com/3736/airbag-overview/

problem is that $700 buys you only the most basic day pack. The bigger models are significantly more expensive ($1300), and even the biggest models are just 45 liters and too small for extended backcountry travel, which is what I have in mind. Still, those are 5 pounds of extra weight I'd happily carry for weeks, especially if I were to go alone when a beacon is just dead weight.

A Night-time Snowboarding Short Lights Up the Last of the Winter Snow

Fashion photographer and filmmaker Jacob Sutton swaps the studio for the slopes of Tignes in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France, with a luminous after hours short starring Artec pro snowboarder William Hughes. The electrifying film sees Hughes light up the snow-covered French hills in a bespoke L.E.D.-enveloped suit courtesy of designer and electronics whizz John Spatcher. "I was really drawn to the idea of a lone character made of light surfing through darkness," says Sutton of his costume choice. "I've always been excited by unusual ways of lighting things, so it seemed like an exciting idea to make the subject of the film the only light source." Sutton, who has created work for the likes of Hermès, Burberry and The New York Times, spent three nights on a skidoo with his trusty Red Epic camera at temperatures of -25C to snap Hughes carving effortlessly through the deep snow, even enlisting his own father to help maintain the temperamental suit throughout the demanding shoot. "Filming in the suit was the most surreal thing I've done in 20 years of snowboarding," says Hughes of the charged salopettes. "Luckily there was plenty of vin rouge to keep me warm, and Jacob's enthusiasm kept everyone going through the cold nights."

Posted by: wagga

Re: Cool Videos - 06/16/12 03:36 PM

Anthony Davidson (Toyota Hybrid) was body-checked by a Ferrari without permission from flight control. Both drivers walked.

Much as I love F1, LeMans racing has become much more relevant to the development of personal transportation - this year hybrids were on pole and may lead the race. Energy recovery is a very significant technology, and will be in most new cars in the near future. No F1 this weekend, but at least we have LeMans & Bloomsday.

If you think this is out of place on the Whitney Zone forum, remember that to get there you need an efficient car or depend on public transportation where there is practically none.

Update: Davidson has been diagnosed with a broken back.

Happy for the cool factor, but then there's also the dumb factor: water on a gasoline fire. Ever notice how in similar crashes/fires at NASCAR or Indy style races the fire crews just roll up in nomex jump suits with a couple of bottles of halon and its out in seconds? No muss no fuss

UBS "Stephen Wiltshire"

Posted by: Mike Condron

Re: Cool Videos - 08/24/12 01:45 PM

Text from the site:

Director/DP Noah David Smith recently teamed up with humble and Publicis to shoot a touching film for UBS featuring artist, Stephen Wiltshire. After spending the early years of his life as a mute Stephen found his voice through drawing. Later diagnosed with autism, drawing began to be the way he communicated with the world. At age nine he began to speak and his art continued to flourish.

Stephen has the amazing talent of drawing city skylines from memory. Having spent only a few hours in a helicopter flying from Brooklyn to the tip of Manhattan, he memorized the city skyline and headed back to a studio to begin his drawing. Stephen then spent the next 3 days sketching the skyline. The panoramic drawing will be featured on a billboard that will be displayed at JFK airport terminal

The piece speaks to the vision of the UBS campaign "We will not rest".

The Curiosity video was the work of Bard Canning, who took a month out of his life to convert the 4 frames/sec. vid to 30 frames/sec. Ultra HD. The sound effects, of course, are synthetic, as Mars atmosphere is even thinner than the summit of Whitney.

That man should be offered a job at NASA. Or at least JPL.

Ok... more info on the above video. Several people have asked. I had to go searching. The above clip has 200k views. It was copied from one posted last June 26, 2012 (5.5M views)

The clip is part of a longer one here (posted later on July 5 2012) The Newsroom First Scene (230K views)

It is from "The Newsroom", a show on HBO, starring Jeff Daniels (Will in the video). Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin who also created the West Wing series.

Here is the HBO website and their "Synopsis" of that first show: "We Just Decided To" (The HBO web page takes a while to load.)

It looks like a good show. Too bad HBO requires a subscription to view it.

" The woman, her newborn and her teenager all needed emergency medical attention. The only way to get them to a doctor was by charter plane, but it couldn't take off because the runway was dark in the dead of night.

So a local radio station put out a call for help, and within 30 minutes, some 300 cars and motorcycles showed up to light the Peruvian runway with their headlamps, according to the BBC.

As you can see here, their plan worked and the plane took off successfully. Just goes to show you what drivers (and riders) can do when they work together.

Undefeated - The Toughest Bridge in the World

Posted by: Steve C

Re: Cool Videos - 04/09/13 11:33 AM

Oh good grief! The millions of dollars of damage there... One would think they might devise a trigger/laser/electric eye or some sort of device a half block away that could set off a whole bunch of flashing red lights and stop just a few of those messes.

Too much stupid "It's not my problem" going around.

Edit: reading the web site FAQ:

Quote:
Why don't they fix it?
Depends on who "they" are and on what "fix" means.
...There is an "overheight when flashing" sign with flashing lights that are triggered by vehicles that are too tall.

Why are they using yellow flashing lights?
Warning lights have to be yellow according to the NC traffic laws.

How much would it take to install a bunch of red flashing lights right at the bridge???
Posted by: wagga

Re: Cool Videos - 04/09/13 07:00 PM

"This bridge proudly shows the world how many Americans flunked their Mathematics and Reading classes."

Too-tall vehicles are detected well before the bridge, and that turns on the flashing lights.

They don't hit the actual bridge, but a massive steel beam, which has already needed to be replaced...

I say keep it that way, we need the entertainment.

Did I mention that the bridge has it's own website - 11foot8.com?

funny to see the ski bum video guys shoot the Bay area. I suppose it was an elaborate "gear test" for them.

Vimeo isn't streaming - Just click on play, then pause - eventually the entire video is downloaded, and then you can play it. Their back end servers are stone age technology, but for slow connections, that's exactly what works, even with highest bitrate video. If it still won't play, then your computer is too slow to decode/scale the image.

All in all probably about 20 trips. They are all from my random adventures from 2010-2012. I do wish I had Yosemite in there but I haven't been to the valley in awhile.

Locations include: Tons of Sierra spots (including a Mt. Whitney of course), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Big Sur, Muir Woods, Redwood National Park, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Anza Borrego, Alabama Hills, Angeles National Forest, Santa Monica Mountains, and Mono Lake.

Re: Cool Videos - 05/07/13 03:48 PM

4 Round Trips over the years starting in 1980 to 2006.

The guy is using a helmet camera I think and this makes the climbing look a lot harder than it is. Basically for the lst 2/3rds of the way you stay on the South (left) side. Put both hands over the knife edge to the North side and your feet easily walk you along the route. About 2/3rds of the way across, switch over to the North (right) side and put your hands again over the knife edge,to the South side this time, and your feet easily walk you along the route.

This knife edge has a reputation of being a very hard route but it really is not even though the camera video makes it appear that way. Some people actually just sit down and straddle the knife edge and scoot across. This takes a lot longer and is pretty hard on the seam of your pants and it is really not necessary to do it that way.

All the above and the video are for good summer weather. In winter, snow or ice, I can not give an opinion as I have only gone in clear summer conditions. It would obviously be a lot harder !!

one for the storm chasers

A supercell near Booker, Texas from Mike Olbinski

Quote:

A rotating supercell. And not just a rotating supercell, but one with insane structure and amazing movement.

I've been visiting the Central Plains since 2010. Usually it's just for a day, or three, or two...but it took until the fourth attempt to actually find what I'd been looking for. And boy did we find it.

No, there was no tornado. But that's not really what I was after. I'm from Arizona. We don't get structure like this. Clouds that rotate and look like alien spacecraft hanging over the Earth.

We chased this storm from the wrong side (north) and it took us going through hail and torrential rains to burst through on the south side. And when we did...this monster cloud was hanging over Texas and rotating like something out of Close Encounters.

The timelapse was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II with a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 lens. It's broken up into four parts. The first section ends because it started pouring on us. We should have been further south when we started filming but you never know how long these things will last, so I started the timelapse as soon as I could.

One thing to note early on in the first part is the way the rain is coming down on the right and actually being sucked back into the rotation. Amazing.

A few miles south is where part two picks up. And I didn't realize how fast it was moving south, so part three is just me panning the camera to the left. During that third part you can see dust along the cornfield being pulled into the storm as well...part of the strong inflow.

The final part is when the storm had started dying out and we shot lightning as it passed over us.

Between the third and fourth portions we drove through Booker, Texas where tornado sirens were going off...it was creepy as all heck. And intense.

I hope you enjoy this. Once thing I've learned about timelapsing is that I always wish it would be longer or wouldn't end. I wish I had been south and been able to record this storm come at me for 45 minutes.

But I love it the way it is. I wasn't ever certain I'd see structure like this even though it's been such a goal of mine. But we did it.

And by we, I mean myself and my buddy Andy Hoeland, who knows his crap and got us into position so we could chase this storm. Without him along I don't know if I get this timelapse.

Mapping the Matterhorn in 3-D -- watch in full screen for best effects.

Quote:
A video crew follows senseFly's (http://www.sensefly.com/) team of engineers marking a historic milestone in proof of surveying techniques, using eBee mini-drones to map the epic Matterhorn and construct a 3D model of "the most beautiful mountain".

The mission involved the coordination of several teams with multiple eBee drones taking over 2200 images in 11 flights, all within a few hours of a sunny alpine morning. The results are stunning: a high-definition 3D point-cloud made of 300 million points covering an area of over 2800 hectares with an average resolution of 20 cm. A special thanks to our partners Pix4D (http://www.pix4d.com) for the creation of the 3D model, Drone Adventures (http://www.droneadventures.org) for mission coordination and MapBox (http://www.mapbox.com) for online visualisation.

Thanks Steve. I may use that in the future, but it seems to me that on long pages, with lots of videos, the loading process is really slowed down. Do you agree?
Posted by: Fishmonger

Re: Cool Videos - 02/22/14 01:38 PM

you can thank Comcast and Verizon's lawyers for your slower loads. Get used to an Internet that sucks.

Meanwhile another new video to test how much they are throttling content to avoid any further network upgrades until we are dead last in the world in bandwidth:

One Day on Cathedral from Shawn Reeder on Vimeo.

Re: Cool Videos - 02/22/14 11:39 PM

I need to get Bulldog34 and his family to watch that video. About two summers back, we were up there, but nobody got to the top. Bob P was taking Bulldog up the technical side, I went up with his wife and daughter on the hiker side.

John, the long pages with many videos don't seem to take very long to load, but maybe it is my connection. ...in fact, checking speedtest.net, I get a download speed of 23.2. You?

If you ever need to look up instructions on displaying pictures or videos, click on the "picture gallery" forum, and there is a link right at the top: Instructions... It takes you to a thread with three posts: Uploading pictures, displaying pictures, and displaying YouTube videos.

As for the Comcast and Verizon stuff: I believe wagga told me that down in OZ, the cable companies installing connections are required to install two cables (or maybe it is fiber optic lines) to each house. And then everyone has a choice of two different cable providers, which I would think would improve competition and bring prices down. I know I chafe every month when I see my $200 Comcast bill (Internet+phone+Cable w/ 3 TV boxes)

Posted by: Fishmonger

Re: Cool Videos - 02/23/14 09:43 AM

In OZ they may have some cost benefits from the competition, but their ISPs all do usage based billing (metered internet), which is just another way of stifling growth and protecting old business models and reducing the need to improve the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, if you are lucky to live in a Google fiber served community (3 cities now, a few dozen coming soon), you have 1000mbps to the home.

Business and government forces will continue to shape our online experience and given few understand how any of this works, they get away with policies that stifle progress and innovation in order to protect their interests.

These things do erode over time. Just look at smartphone plans: I never got one until last year, because ATT wanted $150 per phone per month and I have two teenagers. However, since last fall, I am paying between $35 and $45 for three smartphones combined, because I use a carrier who resells excess bandwidth of the big name phone companies without the free device perks and other limitations, but they do exist (Ting, Virgin Mobile, etc).

Unlike wireless, the problem with broadband is that in most places people don't have a choice like you pointed out. This may be changing, too, but slowly and only regionally (meanwhile the big companies are merging to become even bigger).

For example, in my home town the municipal water & light utility is investigating fiber to the home home, justified as a infrastructure investment mostly. They have seen what fiber did to business development in locations like Provo UT.

Speedtest - don't be fooled by those numbers. All this meters is the throughput you are getting from your device to the nearest Speedtest server, bypassing protocol based throttling and all the downstream congestion you may be faced with trying to access content that's not hosted near your home in a cache box at your ISP's local data center (they may or may not have Netflix cache appliances there, and then not all content is on these caches - don't expect that foreign art movie to be hosted on a server nearby...).

Given the bandwidth we are quoted by ISPs and measure with Speedtest, we should have no problems with 5mbit full HD content at any time, but Netflix stats show that in the US, we are far off from that bandwidth, no matter what your ISP is telling you about your connection. They take their numbers from actual access data which is real world data, not "up to 60 megabit" adverting BS:

http://ispspeedindex.netflix.com/results/usa/graph

Note how Comcast has dropped 25% since October 2013, before the courts gave it green light to do whatever they want with traffic on their network.

Bandwidth shaping isn't new - cable companies have done it forever, with their asymmetrical connections. However, they are getting more and more sophisticated, well beyond "slow down bit torrents to 100kbps" brute force rules.

For example, to make your connection appear snappy fast, even the slowest 18mbps cable plan where I live will reach 60mbps for the first second or two - enough to have web pages load in a hurry. However, the moment any request continues for more than a few seconds, the brake is pulled and your download speeds will quickly approach the limit you are paying for, and then the ISP may slow it further based on content and origin to reduce their costs or reduce load on their shared infrastructure.

Over time, things do move forward: 5 years ago Netflix wasn't even thinking of streaming anything over 1.5mbps, but now they do manage to squeeze through the occasional 4mbps stream, which still stinks compared to what real "high definition" video requires, but consumers are completely youtube desensitized when it comes to video quality

Hi Steve,
The delay I'm speaking of seems to be due to each of the embedded videos needing to make contact with the outside, and download information about the video. If you click on page 35 (previous page), and then scroll up/down you will see most videos are only black spots until the video information is fetched from where ever it comes from.
My connection is fast/speedtest. Normally 50+, but as Fishmonger points out this is only a small part of the equation.

page 35 fully loads in 5 seconds on my ancient dual core laptop, 18mbps cable connection. In my office on 10gbps I can blow up the local speedtest server, but even there it takes a few seconds, probably because the servers need to access hard drives to retrieve the content. If all these videos were the viral kind that has millions of views, it would go much faster since they move those files into RAM caches or at least onto fast access SSD drives.

Note that each of these embedded videos consist several files that come from various servers, first an html page (the iframe you paste in), then usually a Flash player and some javascript files, a JPEG file as preview image that is then loaded. Youtube probably has some tracking files on there, which will come from a different server, and I am sure there's other stuff that requires your browser to go looking all over the place. The videos themselves aren't accessed at all until you click on one of the players.

I filter out about 1500 domain names on my system that are known junk that slow you down and do nothing but tell the big internet companies what you are up to or litter your screen with ads. Ditching these sites from your web experience makes things faster. Worth doing if you are not afraid to edit the "hosts" file on your PC: how to make the internet suck less.

Did you know that a site like newegg.com loads over 200 different domains when you connect to their home page? 200+ servers, and many with nothing else to do but to slow you down while trying to track your internet activity. If you ever got an email from Amazon a day after just looking at something, offering a coupon code for the type of product you viewed, that's where all that crap comes from.

Even if you don't log in anywhere with a user name, they can identify you pretty clearly. Almost every client leaves behind a unique fingerprint when it connects to a web server. The only way to protect yourself from such tracking is to block the sites that do that. See above link...

Hi Fishmonger,
Great link (I think). I copied and pasted the page into notepad, saved as a .txt file, deleted the .txt, changed the name of the current hosts file to hosts_old (in case I needed it again), moved the new hosts file into the folder, and "think" my internet experience is improved. Hard to tell, but I am looking forward to an absence of advertisements based on my browsing/searches.
One question: Do I need to merge the two hosts files (Old and New)? The only entry (other than comments) in the old files is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
Thanks,
John
Never mind the question. I just noticed that the new hosts file has this entry.

:-) replace and forget. For those who haven't tried it, you may get some security warnings when you attempt to edit the file. What I usually do is rename the original file, which it will let you do without warnings, and then copy the new one in. Also need to restart the browser at least. Note that if you use Chrome, it will completely ignore your hosts file and show ads anyway. They don't tell you that when they give you that browser as an "upgrade." I only use Chrome when IE11 has issues, but I refuse to put up with tracking and advertising.

A good place to test if ads are gone is steepandcheap.com - The page now shows only their offers, while other boxes show sseveral gray spaces with "Ad" written on the background, but the ad is gone.

Another effect is that some of the advertising "sponsored" links shown in google searches (especially those top right on the first page) will fire off pages with "this page could not be found"

I understood it was part of their preparations. Wonder if they are going to Whitney in winter, given the conditions look like they are preparing for something far more serious than Whitney in summer.

If Boeing could actually produce a 737 in 3 minutes, it would still take more than 8 days to eliminate the 4000+ order backlog.

Of course in the real world, with union "help", they will need six and a half years...

I think the Sun is ~1.3 million times the size of the earth (by volume), so even the smallest of the flares would totally engulf the earth. And, our sun is not a particularly big star.

2600 MILES IN 4 MINUTES: Time-lapse of my Pacific Crest Trail hike

Text with the video:

Published on Mar 11, 2015

The end of the trail is just the beginning of the story. Visit http://www.LostorFound.org to learn more about the short film, Lost or Found: Life after 2600 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. READ INFO BELOW...

The wonderful music in this video is the title track from MARTIN SEXTON's album, IN THE JOURNEY. Please check him out at http://www.martinsexton.com and on iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/ma...

INFO ON THE HIKE AND TIME-LAPSE VIDEO:

The Pacific Crest Trail travels 2660 miles through the mountains of California, Oregon and Washington, starting at the Mexico border fence near the small town of Campo, CA, and finishing just across the Canadian border in Manning Park, British Columbia. It took about 5 months to complete and I lost 50 pounds in process. Total elevation change was about 450,000 feet, with the high point being 13,200 feet at Forester Pass in the High Sierras. I documented the physical transformation of the environment and myself by taking a selfie on trail every single mile of the hike.

To follow along with the trail and pictures in the video, you can view a map with mileage markers here: http://www.lostorfound.org/timelapse....

The process of stopping to take a picture every mile had a big impact on my actual experience of doing the hike. I had to be well aware of where I was at all times, which was quite annoying in that it made it difficult to get in a zone and maintain good momentum. That said, I am happy to have done it, and it provided a good conversation starter with so many hikers that I would meet along the way. I love seeing so many wonderful faces popping up in pictures in unexpected places.

For the purposes of showing the Pacific Crest Trail in it's entirety, this video is actually a combination of two hikes. Mile 0 through 2424 was done in 2013, before an early snow storm dumped more than six feet of snow on the trail north of Snoqualmie Pass, WA making it impassable at the time. So I road walked the rest of the way to Canada along the Iron Horse Trail and Highway 97 north to Osoyoos, British Columbia. I went back in 2014 to hike the missed portion of the PCT from 2424 to the trail's Northern Terminus at mile 2660. The snow storm and road walk will feature in the upcoming short film, Lost or Found: Life after 2600 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Re: Cool Videos - 05/23/15 01:55 PM

The camera was a "dash cam". Permanently attached inside the car, helps in an accident to analyze what happened.

Yeas, they were pretty odd just driving on. I think the amount of laughter indicates more oddness, too.

Here's a dash cam capture of a famous Australian road rage case in 2012. When the news station published it, the perp turned himself in.

Posted by: saltydog

Re: Cool Videos - 05/24/15 09:43 AM

The story I read said that the perp visited the police station the next day, not to turn himself in but to complain that someone was posting fake video on him. He eventually pled guilty, and got 6 months license suspension, 2 years probation and $17,000 in restitution, for something like "creating a dangerous situation". In this country, it would have been 4 or 5 counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, etc etc etc.

Re: Cool Videos - 06/17/15 01:25 AM

Some notes on the F787 flight.

The empty operational aircraft is something like 277,000 lb. This may have been a green bird, without interior/seats/galleys/loos, etc, which is a lot. Fuel load would have been minimal, so let's assume fuel weight is equal to the stuff which is not installed in a green aircraft.

Total thrust is 2 X 71,000 lbs. A pound of thrust is sort of like a horsepower, as the relation depends on speed.and a whole bunch of other variables.

So, approximately, you have about half a horsepower to every pound of aircraft - just like a formula one car.

So it can't fly sustained vertical, like a F16, (which has more thrusties than poundies) but is really rather sporty.

Weight & balance calculations needed to be hand manipulated to account for the extra weight of the pilot's brass balls.

Finally, although true vertical flight didn't happen, clever positioning of the camera craft made it look that way.

Magic video, even though you now know the tricks behind it.

And there is this. UAV would not like. It happened in San Diego in 2012. Fireworks shows are run by computers. You can design the entire show, then the program "lights the matches" for you.
In this video, an error was made in the show parameters. The pace of the show is governed by a clock variable, entered in milliseconds (where 1000 = 1 second).
Note to programmers & coders among us - do a sanity check on the clock variable - a value of zero means that everything happens at once. Sigh. Do be careful of the volume if using headphones.

So the WORST part about that 2012 San Diego show (other then the fact that those of us who spent all day down there waiting for it and ended up with a one second show...) is that there are 5 barges set through a horseshoe shaped area of San Diego Bay set to have a fabulously synchronized display. San Diego Bay is semi sheltered by the peninsula of Pt. Loma, which provided a terrific obstacle to bounce sound against.... so when the "oops" happened to all 5 barges... it was not quiet by any means. My ears rang for days.

Cool video, but please folks, its pronounced "willis":
John North Willys ( October 25, 1873 – August 26, 1935) see his Wiki ebntrey, e.g. for pronunciation. Symbols would not copy here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Willys
Posted by: Steve C

Re: Cool Videos - 03/09/16 10:15 AM

Heh! I caught that pronunciation, too. Caused me to wonder.

I've found that there are a few regional differences in pronunciations that are curious. For example: Where I grew up (east of Modesto, CA) farmers and everyone I knew pronounced almonds as "ammuns" (with a as in cat, u like e in the), even though all the outsiders pronounced it as spelled. I've changed to pronounce the "L", but when I visit with friends from that area, we always revert to the silent "L" version. Who knows where different pronunciations start.

By the way, the video was fun to watch.
Posted by: saltydog

Re: Cool Videos - 03/09/16 01:01 PM

True enough but the "willies" thing is not apparently regional. It seems to stem from some kind of assumption that the jeep was invented by Willy somebody. Makes me wonder if the guy in the video, or his dad, ever drove that Willys into the Sierra's.

Re: Cool Videos - 03/09/16 01:42 PM

probably went all Bear Grylls and drank his pee.

There are snow fields in his video, he camped rather low that one night in a valley that looked pretty darn green, and it seems this was very early in the season. He also moves mega miles a day, so he probably did ok carrying a gallon or so.

I've seen some of his other videos going off trail in the Sierra just on a whim, not knowing where he was heading. Rather sketchy at times, and he clearly lacks the kind of "what if" concern that keeps people like me from trying things I haven't researched to the t.

That is a really cool video. #1, it is fun to see the guys resurrect such an old relic. But #2, the video photography is outstanding -- someone put a lot of time into creating the video, even with drone shots.

It is pretty amazing, those guys with the skills to get an old van working. Funny parts: the mold left on the front windows, but the gleaming sticker fixed to the back one. And using a little one-hand hatchet to get that fallen tree out of the way.

What a fun video to watch.
