To all my Whitney board friends I just want to say Hi.I am doing well physically.I have pretty much dropped out of most social media.I am still recovering from major shoulder surgery and a stubborn case of carpal tunnel that has not responded to surgery.I say every week that this is the week I start my Whitney training. Hasn't happened yet.I am determined to some how or some way stand on the summit of Whitney this year.I'll be back when I can contribute something to hiking in the WZ.

Hi Rod

I have thought about you several times and wondered how you are. It was great to see a post by you on the WZ finally.

My suggestion for you regarding summiting Mt. Whitney is to try to get a multiple day permit. Each day set a goal like day 1 is Lone Pine Lake.....Day 2 is Outpost camp....Day 3 rest at Outpost camp...Day 4 Trail camp....Day 5 rest at Trail camp ...Day 6 try to reach the summit and back to Trail camp.....Day 7 hike back to the Whitney Portal Store for a burger and fries and an ice cold beer.

Sounds like a heavenly trip to me.

I hope to see more posts from you.

Hang in there, Rod. I've been thinking about you, too.

Hope you can start the training real soon.

Doc, good to hear from you! Barb and I have been thinking about you these past few months and hoping things have been getting better for you and Jana. You've had way more than your fair share of setbacks these past few years, but we love your spirit and determination. You'll stand on Whitney's summit again. It's like eating the elephant - one bite at a time - but you'll get there bro. Hope we have a chance to hook up later this year!

I have gotten in 3 little workouts this week since Saturday.I was in Sacramento today for the Calif. Chiropractic Assoc. legislator conference. So I took the stairs up 4 floors in the Capitol building.Burning thighs and hip flexors, good lord.

I am hitting the stairs at our local college Friday, slowly. There will be some good kind of sore muscles coming. Thanks for the encouragement. I need it. A good kick in the ass is definitely in order.Exercise as medicine is my mantra. My mind is already in a better place just starting down the path towards getting in shape.

Don't quit, Rod!

Rod, hiking is one of the most theraputic activities out there - both physically and mentally. As you increase your efforts, don't get discouraged at occasional setbacks - they happen to all of us. Get outside on trails when you can. Breath the air, feel the wind in your face, enjoy the scenery. Love the burn, even - it means you're getting stronger. Keep that avatar photo of you on Whitney's summit close by for inspiration.

As Laura said, your contributions here are appreciated whether or not you're climbing fourteeners every weekend. Stay in touch and keep us informed on your progress. We're pulling for you, my friend.

PAIN IS WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY and NOBODY EVER DROWNED IN SWEAT...

Do more...

I am reminded of segment of the "Rocky II" movie where Duke is trying to convince Apollo Creed out of a rematch with Rocky Balboa.

"I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you..."

Keep on coming, Rod...Something to consider...
