Hi everyone! we are thinking of camping in the Alabama Hills in early July not sure how hot it gets though that time of year, I know Lone Pine gets pretty toasty...
Alternatively, if anyone knows of other walk in or BLM sites at higher elevations please let me know!

Are you talking about more than one night? Is this camping in preparation for a Whitney hike?

There is walk-in camping at Whitney Portal for single-nights, and nearly always open. Also up at Horseshoe Meadows.

I think Alabama Hills is pretty warm during the summer.

There's also Tuttle Creek Campground, but Horseshoe Meadow is a better prep being at higher altitude. The Whitney Portal campsite can be full so don't plan on finding a guaranteed spot.

Hi Steve thanks for the response! We are just going up for a couple nights to get some hikes in about a week before Whitney on 7/12. We have a reservation at Whitney Portal for the day before and the day after the hike.
This is a separate trip, we drove through AH on the way back from Convict lake a few weekends ago and it looked really cool. It was mid May then and the temps were very pleasant, I'm wondering if it would be way too hot in July to camp there.

Cool thanks for the recommendations, hopefully we can get there early and get a spot!
