Here's a fun video I put together of my hike up the Mt. Whitney Trail a few weeks ago. It was my first time to climb it and I had a blast. We lucked out weather-wise, as it started snowing on the top a few hours after we got back to Consultation Lake.

Great video!
Congrats on your first summit!! Great feeling and accomplishment! Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Hopefully, you overcame the morning headache/nausea OK on summit morning.

Great video..... I'm sure there are plenty on this site who would like to travel up to Whitney in the grand style you did! Must have been awesome from the plane.

And.....Great Campsite.....looks kind of familiar. Bulldog and I stayed at the exact same site in July. Very private, yet easy to get to. Thanks again.

Ooooh, weeeeee, that was fun. I felt like I was flying in the plane with you and hiking to the summit with you too. Congratulations on your first summit and on making such a wonderful video. Wow, what a nice way to get to Lone Pine, flying in, that's a first for me to see. Thanks for sharing, loved it!

Great video!

Any Mt. Whitney "commercials" in the works?

Have fun...

Nice video, Bryan! By the way, you do nice work!   ( click his "work" link here:  www.happylandstudio.com/ )

Your headache and nausea at Trail Camp were a textbook case of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness or Altitude Sickness). Glad you could continue on to the summit.  It really stops some hikers.

I am curious: How did you get from Lone Pine to the Portal?

Thanks everybody for your comments. I really had a blast on the trip and I'm already wanting to plan another mountain adventure somewhere.

To answer some of the questions....

I flew out of Whiteman airport...just a few miles north of Burbank and flew into Lone Pine, The trip takes 1 1/2 hrs. Better than 4 hrs driving! The plane is a '72 Cessna 177B (also known as a Cardinal) We thought a friend was gonna pick us up in Lone Pine but he didn't make it out there so luckily we were able to catch a ride up to Whitney Portal courtesy of the airport manager's husband.

I have to say...that spot at Consultation Lake was great. Much better than Trail Camp...even though you gotta either climb down the ledges or walk over to Trail Camp to get water.

Regarding my headache and nausea, both the altitude and a few nips of that Jack Daniels the night before contributed smile I started feeling better once we got started and felt fine the rest of the way up and down.

The weather was a little iffy for flying when we got back down so we stayed in Lone Pine for the night and flew back the next morning.

VFR.

Glad your flight was uneventful. Probably pretty bumpy up there!

Actually the ride both there and back were smooth as silk. The Owens Valley, however, CAN be one of the most turbulent places to fly if the winds are blowing hard from the west over the peaks. Serious mountain waves are formed that can do "not fun" things to your airplane eek

WAG bags can be used as BARFsickbags...

Always good to have a couple in the cockpit... grin

Ah yes Cardinal. Nice plane. Never had the pleasure of flying one.I used to fly into Whiteman for touch and goes.Mostly flew out of Van Nuys.I currently own a 1941 Stinson sitting in the yard with the wings off.Wife says she is never ever going to fly in that plane even after I fix it up.I did fly some in a Cessna 172.It had the variable speed prop so I am not sure which model. It has been too long to remember.
Yeah that not so nice turbulence is called the Sierra Wave. Can be very dangerous to small planes.
