So I'm rummaging through the shirts at a yard sale over the weekend, and push aside a sleeping bag draped over the rack, as I usually ignore sleeping bags that look old enough to vote. But just as I am noticing that this particular bag doesn't feel quite as compressed, damp and worn as most yard sale bags do, the proprietor says "You want that thing? Its yours if you'll take it." So I handle it again, and it feels like it has never been stuffed, even though I can tell its age from the faded 70's color. Then I notice its got big-tooth nylon zippers and leather pull tabs. Then I find the label: "Class-5 Mountaineering Equipage". Early label, 1971 or so, even before Justus Ski-Hut-North-Face Bauschinger started signing them. Not quite mint, but much better than good enough and the perfect match to my 1973 Kelty Serac. I am taking it as another sign. My JMT trip this summer is getting more old-school (without getting heavier!) all the time.
