I was lucky enough to make my first trip to the summit last July 28th. The storm made for a real adventure. I am going to make my next trek on Aug. 16th. (my 37th. anniversary) My wife is very understanding. I want to stay two days at the Portal to get acclimatized but there are no camp sites available. Do I have to sleep in my truck in the parking lot or is it possible to find a no-show in the campground?

Only 60% of the family campsites in Whitney Portal Campground are reservable. The rest are first-come-first-served. If you arrive early enough, you may be able to get one of those sites.

If it's mid week, you'll have better chance getting first-come first served spot. What a way to celebrate your anniversary. Hope the weather favors you.
