Hiked to Trail Camp Thursday and summit Friday, Aug. 10-11.

Ate about 4,000 calories, mostly Yumbutter and Clif Bars. Took a lot more, including jerky, but didn't want it. Lost about 3 pounds. Took 6 Saltstick capsules, could've used a few more.

Lots of low water throughout; waterproof shoes are necessary if you want to keep feet dry or avoid a second pair of shoes. Low tops are fine.

I wanted to summit for sunrise, and left Trail Camp at 2:30 am and got to summit at 5:35, sunrise at 6. Underestimated how cold it was going to be up there. Thin layers and fingerless gloves aren't enough. Drank 2 liters up and back (low night temps and light layers kept perspiration away); I stowed a liter bottle at Trail Crest but didn't need it.

Lots of space at Trail Camp when I was there. Also mosquitoes in the evening.

Thanks much to Steve and everyone for valuable information in this forum.

Thanks for the report, and congratulations on the summit. Yes, dawn can be pretty icy up there. It's a little crazy about jerky -- I've taken it on many hikes, but most of the time, it just doesn't appeal to me when I am there.

I don't how one can have shoes that are both "low top" and waterproof. What do you have?

Also, is the door to the hut still missing?

Waterproof lowtops were Adidas Swift R GTX, with REI Activator gaiters. Worked great.

Door to hut is on, and it looked very crowded at dawn, like someone camped out in there. Luckily I didn't have to take shelter in there.

Forgot to mention: I don't wear a watch and keep time with an iPhone, and something happened that made it glitch so that it was sometimes an hour ahead. First time it happened I kind of panicked thinking I wasn't going to make sunrise at the summit in time, then I started to realize I couldn't have been hiking that long.

Hmmm.... that doesn't match with this picture taken 8/13:

Oops, I thought it opened inwards and thought I saw a door.

Dang, my boots are not waterproof. I wear Vasque Breeze, the non-waterproof nonGore-Tex version. I'll just have to try to stay dry by avoiding water. Is that possible?

These Vasue Breeze hikers are highly breathable, so when they do get wet, they dry out quickly. Will bring extra socks just in case.

Or I might go light with a Vasque Mindbender trail-running shoes (heavier duty than your average trail runners).

I'm doing the day hike this Friday with my brother and nephew.

I solo hiked 9th-10th and while avoiding water not realistic right now, maneuvering around and/or over via rocks/logs, etc. is doable with minimal water penetration - with hiking poles for proper balance. Water, snow and ice at places along trail as advertised throughout this forum. But if you stop, look, assess beforehand you should be fine. Even with all the reading and seeing pics here, it was still quite amazing to see first hand. Note, some rocks are slippery while others are not? It was very warm/hot all the way until turning the corner at trail crest where it meets the JMT at which time it felt like a mild artic blast of cold air for the remainder of the journey.

Echoing what Mac says, you can avoid getting your shoes wet, but it's going to slow you down and you're going to have to be VERY careful in places.

I can guarantee the hut door was not there as well. I'll be posting my trip report shortly.
