Great conditions overall. 4 people (2 for the 1st time) climbed 6 hours to upper boyscout lake. A little route finding required from lower to upper boyscout. It was hot, so glad we got an alpine start. Camped at iceberg lake which took another 3 hours (a little route finding required, but directionally it was more clear where to go). Chilly in the morning; full moon lights up the sky. Summit day the next morning (early start). Gully/Chute had hard snow in the morning so used rocks for a bit. Rested at the notch; took the work around route to meet up with the JMT. Used 1 hiking pole on the downside of the mountain while using pre-made steps in the snow. Felt stable without crampons (small amount of ice but was able to step around it), but it would have been helpful if you want to lug extra weight. Clear day at the top (9:15 am) and it was warm enough to not need to re-layer. On the way down the route to the notch still had fairly hard packed snow. For the chute, we were able to glissade down parts of it. Ledges took a lot of focus to figure out the correct path. Hiking poles helpful on the way down. Not a lot of people on the trails overall. Mosquitoes were light but present up through upper boy scout lake. Heat / temperature / finding shade were some of the challenges.

Thanks for the info! Do you have any pictures of the "easy walk off"? It would be nice to see how much ice/snow is left. Good to hear you made OK without crampons. A couple fatal accidents happened around that area in the last couple of years. I'm going on the 28th, so I'm hoping to do the same as you did, but hopefully with no snow.

I’m heading up on the MR route 28th. I wonder if an ice ax will be needed?

Just did Whitney (and Muir) via Mountaineer's Route as a day hike yesterday (7/24) with my wife and 10-year old son. Route generally followed descriptions online and was fairly straightforward if comfortable with Class 3 climbing. No special equipment needed. We hiked in sneakers. Followed chute to the left of the snow filled gully above Iceberg Lake. Final chute up to summit had some ice at bottom which required extra care. Nearly had a mishap when a large boulder came free, but did not fall, about 15 vertical feet from the top. Also, did short scramble/climb up Muir on return via Whitney Trail. Overall, this hike was much easier than Russell via East Ridge which my son and I did two weeks prior as a overnight.

Thanks for the report! We're headed up to UBSL next Tuesday planning to climb Whitney and Muir from UBSL on Wednesday and Russell via the East Ridge from UBSL on Thursday.

On climbing the final 400, does starting up on the left then crossing over to the right sound about right? We plan to descend this way as well unless the "walk off" is completely dry.

Any suggestions for Muir? Is it a fairly obvious hike and scramble from the trail?

Do you remember about how long Russell took you from UBSL?

We had a great trip! We hiked up to Upper Boy Scout Lake and camped out on Tuesday. Yesterday we climbed the Mountaineering Route to the summit and back down to our camp. As others have reported, the remaining snow and ice was not a problem in the fun "Final 400" which we climbed up and downclimbed on our way back. We saw others on the "walkoff route" which looked mostly dry. We hiked out today. Monday afternoon there was a lot of smoke and we talked with climbers who said they had ashes falling on their tents at Iceberg Lake. However, the smoke wasn't a problem for us the past three days. The summit views were great. Let me know if you have any specific questions.
