Yes, July 2008. What a mess in Independence. We hiked Whit July 17, 2008. We might have been neighbors! We stayed at 44. The morning of our hike around 2:00 a.m. my wife was preparing a PBJ on a bagel. She just sat her bagel down for just a moment, when a bear appeared out of nowhere and scared the beejeezus out of her and "hissed" at her. Myself, Dave and Jane (TeamBruin--BruinDave and BruinJane), offered immediate assistance by screaming and blowing our whistles. The bear scampered off becoming slightly entangled in the hammock that was strung up downsite. We are talking a "full horizontal" neck string with four paws in the air! Just like in the cartoons or on the Three Stooges.
Poor bear. Doesn't like homo sapiens with hammocks now!
