PS About ignoring cries for help: many years ago I was up North Coast diving for abalone and I heard a very shrill whistle. I asked the people I was with what it was, and they all said "Oh, nothing -- ignore it". I did not. Around the next boulder was a man trapped in the surf with just his head out of the water enough to blow the whistle. Another swimmer and I went out and retrieved him.....and I left my 'companions' behind.
