The Devil's 'Corkscrew'is that lovely set of switchbacks coming up out of the Pipe Creek area where one starts to seriously ascend- where you started to bonk. The trail then levels off in the Tapeats and then into Indian Gardens.

I concur on avoiding Gatorade. VITALYTE is a provn electrolyte supplement at GC. It was developed in AZ,first marketed as HYDROLYTE; and has less sugar than Gatorade. MUCH easier and quicker to absorb into the system, and less upset stomach. Dehydration leads to loss of appetite then upset stomach; and sugary items don't sit well at that point.

Like Whitney; people come to GC for many reasons. The only thing many of those folks who do R2R and run more in a day/two; is their feet. They are 'checking' this hike off their bucket list. They miss the condors, animals, the silence, the beauty of the canyon, etc. Many end up being more experience for the very experienced EMS rangers in heat related injuries. For around 12 hikers a year- it is their last hike-the average death rate below the rim.
