Sam- the 'easier way' is not to go on the weekend, have flexibility on the start date, and if one doesn't get either a day or overnight permit online; get a walkup permit at the visitor center. Permits are required for either a day or overnight hike to the summit- regardless of one uses the main trail or the mountaineers route.
