I live in Alaska, have never tried Whitney in the winter, but the slope looks very similar to many slopes I do here always using Kahtoolas. I love them. Part of the answer may depend on the proficient use of the ice axe. I also love hiking with my ice axe and always regret the switch of season to trekking poles.
