Just returned from Cottonwood Lakes over the weekend - hiked Cottonwood Trailhead > South Fork Trail > New Army Pass > Langley > Old Army Pass > Lake 5 > Muir Lake > South Fork Lake.
There is snow on Old Army Pass and freezes overnight. It is passable. I didn't find it difficult, however my girlfriend was petrified of the snow and sheer cliff below. We both made it safely across the snow and descended with no issues.
Use extreme caution. A CHP rescue helicopter made several landings Sunday in the vicinity of Old Army Pass, leading me to believe there was an accident of some sort.
