Jim: I am looking closely at an Amphitheater Pass variation for my John Muir Route next summer. There seem to be a couple of good choices: did you exit from Amphitheater Lake to Upper Basin, or go south through Dumbell and Lakes Basin, over Cartridge Pass and down to the South Fork?
