On Sept 18th I hiked up Mount Whitney to celebrate my 70th birthday. Clear but cold conditions with very stiff breeze. Easy water crossing in Big Horn Park, no water shoes needed; I took the old trail so cannot report on the Lone Pine Creek crossings. Switchback water sources were frozen in the A.M. but running by early afternoon. Snowfield almost gone, easy track through it. I stayed in Trail Camp that night and the wind was howling; I'm guessing some gusts approached maybe 50 mph. Some day hikers who were running late struggled returning after dark. The next day one camper told me that a family of four day hikers asked to warm themselves in his and his partner's 3 person tent and ended up staying most of the night.
