I have been in communication with the regional surveyor for National Geodetic Survey and he also provided me a paper on the history of elevation surveys and computations for Mt Whitney written by USGS.
My correspondence with NGS today says 14,500 ft. USGS says that 14,494 should be the published elevation for USGS provisional maps, single edition USFS maps, and GNIS, but that using NVD88 and VERTCON program from NGS, the elevation is 14,500.
NGS said the new datum in 2022 is likely to reduce elevations in the Whitney area by 3 ft.
I'd be happy to send the USGS doc to anyone interested.
