The parking lot will be open on the North Rim. You could start there and have more options on the South Rim(hotels)if you weren't up to the return trip that day.
It's a tough hike but can be done with the right training. I would recommend going down S. Kaibab and back up Bright Angel if starting from the South Rim. Good luck!
