i plan to take the Cottonwood Pass route. i've seen recommendations for taking the Army Pass route through Cottonwood Lakes
I've only ever heard this in the context of it being more scenic. New Army is impressively vertical and has amazing views. It's also what you want to take if interested in bagging Langley along the way. Otherwise I am not aware of any strategic advantage to it when your goal is getting to the JMT / Whitney.
