fit2climb, the pavement ends at the Schulman Grove, which is at the southern end of the mountains. You have to drive 15 miles of gravelly road. If you take it easy, and make sure you have a good spare tire, you should be ok. 4WD is not necessary at all.
This late in the season, don't head up that way if any storms are predicted. I snowmobiled in one winter and found a car parked up there, stranded for the winter.
