The Mammoth and Whitney areas are two very different beasts. In mid-March there just wasn't what I would call a whole lot of snow in the Whitney area. I've seen a heck of a lot more.
Over the years, I have found SoCal mountains as a better yard stick for Whitney. And folks, the locals ain't got all that much snow in them compared to last year.
Every thing depends on how hot it gets this spring. If we have a hot spring, you will be surprise how fast to snow comes of these mountains. If it's like last year, it will be at least to mid June before someone beats a trail in beyond the cables.
