Are any of the passes open? I thought Sonora pass opened, but current DOT website says it's closed. Does anyone know how to tell if they're working on them, and what their expected opening dates are?
I know there is a lot of info on Tioga pass, but that usually opens later than the others. I was hoping to drive from the bay area to Mt. Whitney this weekend, but that looks like a no-go right now.

Your best bet is to cross the Sierra via Bakersfield and Tehachapi. It is a long drive, but all the roads are clear.

Steve: What is the best route, Fresno area (Visalia?) to Lone pine, when all routes are clear? DIcey assumption, I know, but I will probably be making that trip to set up a shuttle (from Lodgepole) around July 9, and it could happen.

From Sequoia N.P. to Lone Pine, it is faster to go through Bakersfield.
You can take the Hwy 99 route from Visalia to Bakersfield, or Hwy 65. 99 is longer, but lots more freeway. I've not driven the 65 route. (I wouldn't take the 155 shortcut to Lake Isabella--way to rural and slow.)
In Bakersfield you have two choices: The longer, faster road through Tehachapi via CA 58, or shorter, more scenic and slower through Lake Isabella via CA 178. I vary these two depending on how tired I am and whether it is daylight or night. Edit: These two routes take very close to the same amount of time.

Thanks, Steve. Time is of the essence on this trip, so Bikersfield 99/58 it is.

A friend and I always factored that taking 178 or 58 is almost the same amount of time really. A difference of like 10 minutes since you have to drive like 40 miles further taking the 58 route. I suppose it all depends on how you drive in the Kern Canyon though.

Thanks Rogue P. I forgot to mention that the 58 and 178 take just about the same amount of elapsed time. More gas on the 58 due to the extra distance, but an easier drive since it is 4-lane all the way.
It is cool to stop at Walker Pass on the 178, to see where the PCT crosses.
