This is very sad news.
He died of asbestosis related illness. Sort of related.... so did my mentor. I carried Bill's obit with me to my first summit of Whitney in 1996.
As a way of honoring Lincoln Hall, I reviewed the quotes I saved from his book. My mountaineering quote collection contains a section on "Dull Brains" - my favorite among many categories. He had this to say about being in the Death Zone:
I was no longer capable of distinguishing between the reality of the mountain and the fabrications of my mind.

May he rest in peace.
