Hello,

I am a new member here, and would like to add my trip to the calendar. I was successful in securing an overnight permit for entry on Monday, June 18th. It will be a party of 2 (maybe 3).

We plan to camp at Portal the night before, hike and camp on Monday, and summit and hike out Tuesday 6/19. Thank you for the wealth of information here.

DMO: Welcome to WhitneyZone! Whitney will make a nice addition to your blog.

There are now three members starting or day hiking June 18. I hope you can maybe meet up. Last year we had a freak flag setup -- people carrying ribbon on their hiking poles or pack to help ID each other.

DMO, you are coming from so far and spending so little time at altitude. Be sure to read up on Diamox. If I were you, I'd get some, try a dose or two at home, and bring it here. One night at the Portal, and one at Trail Camp is, for some, the perfect recipe for AMS at Trail Crest. I'd spend the night before at Horseshoe Meadows (10k), and maybe stop and camp at Outpost Camp, rather than making it to Trail Camp.

Steve,
I really appreciate the suggestion. I've started to look into options to include camping at Horseshoe Meadow on Sunday. It looks like we can pick up our permit and items in Lone Pine, then head there in time to find a site before late evening without much deviation from our original plan. Also, if it proves to be effective, we should not have a problem getting to the portal in the morning and then hiking with enough time to reach at least Outpost Camp. The mileage and elevation gain should be no issue for us, just the elevation and if our bodies experience any effects. It also looks very beautiful there, and would only add to this already exciting experience, and I'm not even there yet.

New poster but long time reader.

Received a permit for 6 people on September 24th-26th. I am a bit worried as it is later in the season. Hopefully the heavey snowfall holds off until October.

See you guys up there!

Cody

Please post trail condition with pictures please . I'm sure some of our local whitney hikers will do the same but more is great. I'll be heading upmjune 12-16 and would like a close report.

Thanks

John

Hi All,
Steve, great web site. Lots of info. I appreciate you efforts.
I've hiked via the main trail five times (only made it to the top twice - Trail Crest all attempts, but weather forced retreat twice, and lack of desire once), but have never tried the Mountaineer route. My daughter (age 24) and I have permits to hike on June 20th. Right now our plan is to go with the main trail, but depending on weather we might try the mountaineer route. Do you have any advice as to increased difficulty/risk of mountaineer route vs. main trail?
Edit - Actually, I just found the "Reference" link in the forums, and found lots of info on Mountaineer route, and answered my own question. I think we will stick with the Main Trail for now.
Please add us to the calendar.
Thanks again,
John

I will be heading up on Friday April 27th. (party of 1)Planning on spending the night at Outpost Camp. After that I'm a little up in the air as for my plan. I guess it all depends how I feel. As long as I'm back in Vegas to fly home by Monday at noon I'll be good.

10 yrs ago I did the main trail in a day with my brother, last fall in I did the loop and then back up to LBSL and down in three days. The MR is MUCH steeper, there is no maintained trail. Weight is a HUGE issue IMO. The biggest plus is you gain elevation VERY fast and the scenery changes every hour or two. I vow NEVER to do the main trail again due to its LOOONG drawn out descent that never ends and leaves me hating the MTN.

The one SERIOUS issue you need to look into is the last 400 ft. I would assume from the lack of snowfall this year that by June you will have a clearer path than we did, but it was by far the scariest thing I have done at high altitude so far. Its DOABLE without ropes going up, but coming down I would not recommend, especially if your daughter does not have much experience or either one of you has a strong will to live. wink

I am heading back up with some well trained buddies of mine on Monday to beat the Permit season. If you have any detailed questions about the route etc, I have benefited so much from guys like Steve on this Forum and I know what its like to be hungry for knowledge. Let me know how I can help. Cheers and happy climbing!

Hi WildTurkey,

As you said:

Thanks for your comments. The thing about the last 400' are the consequences of an error. While I doubt there are any "moves" that require super human strength or balance, and is likely "doable" by both my daughter and me, the risk is just not worth it, so we will most likely do the main trail. Yes, it is long, but for my daughters first Mt. Whitney Hike I would like to optimize on safety and success.

Thanks again,

John

I'll get the calendar updated tonight.

But first, THANKS to John Sims for donating to the Mt Whitney Hikers Association! (notice he has "WHA Member" after his name.) Donations like his keep this site paid up and running.

Last year we had enough in the kitty to donate $250 to the Inyo County Search and Rescue group, to help support their volunteers who come to the aid whenever a Mt Whitney hiker has an emergency.

So Thank You to everyone who helps. thanks   thanks   thanks

Rick,

We are going on the 27th to trail camp (party of 4) then to the summit on Saturday.

Maybe we'll see you on at the Portal or on the trail.

Have a good trip.
