I'm considering heading up tomorrow and spend the night at Horseshoe Meadows, then attempt to get a day hike permit for Sunday on Saturday morning.

I'll be alone and looking for others to hike with that may be day hiking on Sunday. I day hiked Whitney twice last year, so I know the trail pretty well. Out of shape right now and just want to do some training and see how far I can get in a day (hopefully summit).

Please let me know if you wouldn't mind me tagging along to have some company while hiking!

Excellent plan, Bryan. Checking the last 3 years' Unused Whitney Permits pages, there have always been nearly 20 walk-in permits available, even on weekends. July 4 is when day hike permits get all used up.

As for hiking with someone, just start out on the trail, and talk with people you meet. You won't be alone, and others may be happy to include you in their groups. You will find friendly folks on the trail.

We'll be at the Portal on Sunday, but our permits are for Monday. I'm sure you could join us if you have an extra day.

One day I'd like to hike the entire John Muir Trail and not leave a single footprint. -Randy Morgenson
